Chatter by Ethan Kross, PhD
Dr Ethan Kross is a highly regarded researcher and expert on controlling the conscious mind. In Chatter, he uses research studies (his and other scholars’) focusing on the brain and human behavior to weave together a most compelling treatise on how to gain control over that inner voice, turning it from being a negative critic into a helpful coach.
His forthright tone makes it easy to understand. Just corralling with a technique like mindfulness can turn off the negative thoughts for a while, but nothing really gets resolved. Kross teaches us how to corral AND convert that voice into a valuable constructive ally. The bonus in owning the book are the tools at the end. All the principles, and techniques Kross refers to are listed together in this section- especially like ranking easiest to most difficult to implement. My favorite is one of the fast ones—turn the chatter into 2nd or 3rd person using one’s name instead of “me” or “I.” It helps you zoom out from your inner voice and think more like a problem-solver not for yourself but for someone else.
Smart Brevity
Brevity is confidence. Length is fear. That’s the guiding principle of Smart Brevity, a communication formula built by Axios journalists to prioritize essential news and information. We’re all slammed with too many words! Slacked words. Emailed words. Texted words… Concise communication is a key focus for both my leadership and my career transition clients, so I’m super excited to recommend this book, which comes with easy-to-use tools and worksheets! The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World
Frans Note to Reader: A new “Fran-Favorite” book I plan to share with clients and friends. As Dorie points out, “it’s no secret that we’re pushed to the limit. Today’s professionals feel rushed, overwhelmed, and perennially behind. So we keep our heads down, focused on the next thing, and the next, without a moment to breathe. How can we break out of this endless cycle and create the kind of interesting, meaningful lives we all seek?”
The book helps re-frame our hyper “in the moment” thinking, with actionable takeaways that will change the reader’s perspective and highlight the importance of the big picture and the power of small changes that, made today, will have an enormous and disproportionate impact on our future success. We need to start playing The Long Game! Purchase
